Workshop 1A: Cycling Infrastructure – Perceived and Objective Safety
Tue, 4 Nov | Oslo Science Park
09:30 - 12:00
Most countries want more cycling, but safety depends on both how it feels and how it actually works. Some infrastructure can seem safe while increasing risk. This workshop will explore which designs achieve both perceived and real safety, with insights from Oslo and examples from abroad.
This workshop is arranged by Torkel Bjørnskau and Katrine Karlsen at the Institute of Transport Economics.
09:30 - 12:00
Workshop 2A: Getting Along on the Road – Respect, Communication, and Safety
Tue, 4 Nov | Oslo Science Park
09:30 - 12:00
How can all road users get along? In this interactive workshop we will explore getting along on the road and ways to address road rage. Through presentations and group work, practical interventions will be designed to make our roads safer and more inclusive.
The workshop is arranged by Michael van Eggermond and Dorothea Schaffner from University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.

Wed, 5 Nov | Marble Hall
09:45 - 10:30
Anna Niska is director of the Swedish Cycling Research Centre (Cykelcentrum) and research leader at VTI, where she has worked since completing her PhD on winter cycling in 2002. As an active voice in Swedish cycling research, Anna’s work focuses on how infrastructure shapes cyclists’ safety, comfort, and mobility, with results that have influenced national guidelines and methods. Her passion for making cycling accessible to more people has earned her several national awards, and the topic of her keynote will reflect on infrastructure’s role in enabling safe and comfortable cycling.

Cycling vs. Safety
Thu, 6 Nov | Marble Hall
Chair/s: Aslak Fyhri
13:15 - 13:45
Norway’s transport policy is guided by two major ambitions that don’t always align: the zero-growth goal for car traffic and Vision Zero for traffic safety. The first encourages more cycling; the second aims to prevent all serious injuries. This session stages a debate between the City and the State, exploring where these goals support each other – and where they pull in opposite directions.
Speakers: Guro Ranes from The Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Mari Svolsbru from the City of Oslo.
